Kevin Smith says he’s cracked the story for the Dogma sequel by Kevin Fraser

JoBlo / 2025-06-05 00:55

Shortly after regaining control of Dogma from the Weinsteins last year, Kevin Smith quickly announced that he was working on a sequel. Since then, Smith has taken the original film on tour, including a screening at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, which prompted him to get bitten by the festival bug again. He told Deadline that he wants to return to the festival with a sequel to Dogma by 2028.

“What I didn’t realize is, I would get there and I’d get bit by the bug again, and I’d be seeing all these places, these haunts from my childhood, from my 20s, so to speak, from the three times I was there when I was a kid, once in ’94 with Clerks, once in ’99 with Dogma, and then again in 2006 with Clerks 2,” Smith said. “And suddenly, I was like, ‘Why is it that you assume that the Cannes-worthy portion of your life is over? You never even expected it to begin in the first place. It was never part of the aim. It just came along with the journey. Maybe if you really try, you could.’ So, it was the 78th edition this year and so I was like, ‘You know what? I wanna come back on the 80th, or the 81st at the latest with the Dogma sequel, like that’s a Cannes-worthy movie.’ And so, I said that on stage when I was intro-ing and everybody applauded, and [festival director] Thierry Frémaux was on stage with me, and he adds, ‘if it is good,’ and I was like, ‘fair enough, if it’s good, yes.’“

As for the Dogma sequel, Smith says he’s been “whimsying about it for the last six months” and has finally cracked the story.

“I absolutely love it. I feel like when people see it, they’ll be like, ‘Oh, I get it,’ like ‘that makes sense’ kind of thing. Hopefully they’ll be like, ‘that’s clever’ and not be like, ‘well shit, I would have done that,’” Smith said. “I will set a place at the table for everyone who was in the first movie who is still alive. Sadly, Alan [Rickman] and George [Carlin] won’t be able to join us, but I’ll set a place at the table for all of them. If they want to come back, they’ll have a role to play, but if not, no harm, no foul. The story I’m telling can definitely make use of everybody who is in Dogma, but I can also tell it without. So, that makes me pretty excited to go forward. It’s its own unique tale.“

Following up a beloved film with a belated sequel doesn’t always work out, but Smith feels that he’s got a winner on his hands, at least at this stage. “I feel very happy with it,” he said. “I can’t drop the ball on it. It’s like one of the last fing movies I ever made that’s beloved across the boards and shit like that. So, I would never step up to the plate unless I was like, ‘Oh, this will fing work nicely as a companion piece.’ So, I feel pretty great about it, man. But of course during the whimsy stage one always feels great about it. It’s when you make it and everyone sees it and they’re like, ‘Well, that f***ing sucks. You should have left well enough alone.’ You just hope it doesn’t come to that.” Hopefully not.

Hang on… disappointed by “Yoga Hosers”?

I got exactly what I expected from “Yoga Hosers”.

It’s not like Kevin Smith is out there demanding we sip wine while we watch, haha.

No but he also constantly shits on clerks, but he knows exactly it’s the best movue he ever made. “People like that movie? That’s craaaazy” he’s not trying to make bombs either, he wants to make money, not good movies. He kept saying how proud he was while editing the new jay and silent bob and how incredible and funny the movie was before it came out. It’s honestly one of the worst movies i have seen, and i generally like bad funny movies. He wants nothing more than get into the disney money, that’s why he can’t say a bad thing about the new star wars movies, he praises them. Ready player one? One of the best movies ever according to him, because he can’t upset steven Spielberg, because he might get a paycheck. He has no integrity and will never make a watchable movie again.

Also, Ready Player One is masterpiece!

…I should go add it to that thread of shitty movies I will defend.

I told you I have bad taste.

I will say, it was fun to see Spielberg do a faithful adaptation of a shitty little fun book into a shitty little fun movie.

Okay. Fuck it, this is the Internet. I’m gonna spend a few minutes as a Kevin Smith apologist, while I take a shit.

Please don’t take any of this seriously, but I’ll share it in case it helps you enjoy his films more.

I hope he’s not murdering anyone while I type this up.

“People like that movie (Clerks)? That’s craaaazy”

I think Kevin Smith has some crazy impostor syndrome.

Maybe I missed it, but i haven’t seen him ungrateful at his success, just surprised.

And it’s pretty normal to think one’s own earlier work isn’t as well done as ones own later work.

It’s often wrong, but it’s a pretty normal comfortable belief.

He wants nothing more than get into the disney money, that’s why he can’t say a bad thing about the new star wars movies, he praises them.

The only creative works I have ever seen Kevin Smith be critical of are his own. I take it as professionalism, and it fits his brand.

Kevin accomplished a lot for weed legalization, under the banner of “we should just let people enjoy things”.

That slogan has become a big part of his public brand, and I don’t blame him for sticking to it.

Now let’s pause and admit that in this entire defense of Kevin Smith, I didn’t actually really say anything nice about his movies.

I will say that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of Kevin Smiths movies.

Sadly, by many people’s standards, I still haven’t said anything nice about his movies. It’s pretty easy to verify that I have bad taste in movies.

I’d be down for a sequel of Dogma where it turns out the book of Mormon was also real and the Catholics duke it out with the Invaders from planet Kolob that have superpowers by virtue of magic underwear!

Now here’s a man who will drag every great thing he’s done through the mud over and over to squeeze every last dollar out of it.

Edit: in fairness I have to say that he had the moral fortitude to not touch Dogma as long as Weinstein still had the rights. Hence why we are getting this article now. So obviously the above statement is a bit of a broad generalization. But good god, look what he did to Clerks.

Dogma will still be as it is. Enjoy the new movie or not, the old stuff remains the same unless your director is the kind to update their old films, but that’s not common

Christianity in general and catholicism especially has enough weirdness in its believes and systemic problems to produce hundred dogma movies and none would be to have a sequel in a literal sense.

When dealing with myths, legends, and fairytales, one can invent whatever storyline suits them. What determines its success is how interesting those stories are.

Tell whatever fantastical story you please, as long as you make it interesting.
