I’m referring to people in the thread acting like eveyone knows what a critical mass event is or that people should always be expected to know that a mass number of cyclists taking over the road is to promote better infrastructure. They are baffled that anyone would be confused.

We have some roads that pass next to woods and other shady areas where insects like to group up for mating/feeding/whatever else bugs do in a group and passing through them at the right times would mean stopping by a gas station shortly after to clean them off. I avoided those areas entirely during certain parts of the year when riding a bike, because it is way worse without a windshield!

Now those areas barely have anything at all.

I also miss the large numbers of lightning bugs that used to hang out in our back yard. A couple dozen is a lot less fun to watch compared to hundreds.

Downvotes are frequently used for disagreement no matter what the intended use is supposed to be. Heck, a lot of the time people assume comments are misinformation when the person voting just disagrees. People often upvote misinformation because they agree with it too.

But feel free to keep telling yourself that everyone is using votes the way they are ‘intended to be used’ instead of how they are actually used which is ‘I agree that this is accurate and/or find this funny’ or ‘I disagree with the post because it is wrong/contradicts my existing knowledge/is worded insultingly’.

There seems to be a general agreement that people should avoid communities that promote misinformation instead of downvoting it as well, which I find contradicts the idea of downvoting misinformation being a purpose.

I have some roads which would be swarming with bugs at certain times of day barely have any now. A lot of the country roads by fields just don’t have the insect populations they used to around, I assume due to the massive amount of insecticides they use.

Yes, stopping and waiting it out is what I said she should have done. Someone else said she should have ‘just gone around’.

Not sure how she could turn off and go around when she has no idea why there is a massive amount of bikes, where they are coming from, or where they are going. Going around requires more information than someone surprised by a massive number of surprise bikes would have.

I’m not opposed to the idea, and I do think just stopping and waiting it out is the best option. She was wrong to just drive forward through the crowd of bikes, but maybe she hoped she would get past the mass of bikes faster?

But expecting someone to ‘just go around’ is pretty dismissive of someone’s confusion when completely surrounded in a situation they don’t understand. Like what if she just needed to turn left and go two blocks?

While she is clearly a dumbass for not just parking and waiting, why is the bike ride taking up all of the lanes in both directions? Was the street blocked off and this lady ignored it?

Yes, but actually no. Upvotes are are similar to seeing someone’s smile or nodding in agreement. Downvotes are like a dead stare or shaking their head in disagreement.

If someone else is downvoted but seems to have posted in good faith or as a joke it means there is probably something I am missing. Maybe they are serious when I think it is a joke, or there is some context that is news to me.

If I have a commwnt that is downvoted significantly (like ten or more down than up, or only down) then I double check to see if I was unclear or maybe a joke didn’t land. Mostly to make sure my intent came though.

If I clarify something and people just don’t agree with it because they don’t see the same nuance then I do think about it a but and come back later to see if maybe I was wrong or everyone else is a dumbass. Most of the time it is me not being clear enough. If they are dumbasses, oh well.

I also feel happy when a good comment gets upvoted to double digits. That is a nice feeling.
