skisnow@lemmy.cato World News@lemmy.world•New Zealand passes record suspension of lawmakers over hakaEnglish4·17 hours agoI don’t know anything about New Zealand, or Maori culture, or history, or parliamentary procedure, or the Treaty Principles Bill, or the hearings that led to this decision, or the Haka, or sociology, or anthropology, or race relations, or indigenous issues, but I think…
why don’t they just have everyone do their hakas at the start, like in the rugby?

skisnow@lemmy.cato Technology@lemmy.world•Google confirms more ads on your paid YouTube Premium Lite soonEnglish17·18 hours agoWhat pisses me off most is that the way the internet works now is that ten years ago, someone who wanted to share about how to service your 90s Volvo that would have written it on a web page with a few photos that would have been quicker, cheaper and easier to write, quicker and easier to read, and cost next to nothing to host.
But because Google control fucking everything, that same person is now heavily incentivized to make it a pointlessly long video instead, that took days to make and edit, and is harder to use while working, and if they don’t do that then they ain’t getting anywhere near the top of the search results and you weren’t going to find it anyway.
It sucks and I can’t wait for people to wake up and tell Google to fuck off and stop ruining the internet.
skisnow@lemmy.cato Wikipedia@lemmy.world•Kei car (ultra-compact Japanese car category)English8·18 hours agoIt’s crazy how much of America’s self-image revolves around notions of “Freedom” when it’s one of the most oppressive places in the developed world.
Even the stuff you do have supposed guaranteed constitutional freedoms for, come with such heavy caveats that they never actually play out that way in practice.

Yes. That one. Obviously.
I respect your noble dedication to epistemology, but at some stage it’s perfectly reasonable to say that herding millions of people into an increasingly small area whilst forcibly starving and bombing them is a genocide, whilst having an immigrant population of barely 15% is not a genocide.

Well done. I’m like most people in that I didn’t spot it until he started talking about a subject I knew about. The first Tesla Roadster looked amazing1, and then the hyperloop sounded like a cool idea2, and then oh wait what’s he saying about software development now?
1 because its body was made by Lotus
2 except it doesn’t work
A lot of their success seems to be recognising an opportunity before anyone else
Pretty much everyone in the world has at some point in their lives had some idea or spotted some gap in the market that could be a successful product, but 99% of us don’t get to act on that because the rent is due and will be due again next month.
skisnow@lemmy.cato memes@lemmy.world•This is the hardest concept to understand in physicsEnglish31·20 hours agoI think OP’s meme illustrates Feynman’s point very well; there comes a stage where if the number of incorrect statements in your explanation outnumber the the correct ones, it’s no longer a meaningful explanation.
skisnow@lemmy.cato Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Interviews as seen by HR and the candidateEnglish22·2 days agoYeah, some of the bandwagonny replies I’m seeing in this thread do not make their posters sound like someone you’d want to spend your working life sat next to.
You don’t have to show interest in the company to help the CEO get richer, but you should probably show an interest in the company because it’s where you’re going to be spending 1/3rd of your entire waking hours from now on, and you’re going to have a fucking miserable time of it if you’ve already decided to mentally check out before you’ve even got to the interview. Have some self-respect.

It infuriates me every time I see mention of it anywhere.
Incidentally, telling someone to have a little meth is the least of it. There’s a much bigger issue that’s been documented where ChatGPT’s tendency to “Yes, and…” the user leads people with paranoid delusions and similar issues down some very dark paths.

Earlier this week Bernie Sanders called for an end to “school lunch debt”. The senator, and one of the Democrat candidates for president, tweeted that it “should not exist in the wealthiest country in the history of the world” and pledged to “provide year-round, free universal school meals” if he won the White House.
LOL, imagine thinking Democrats would nominate someone standing on a “let’s feed poor people’s kids” platform. Was never going to happen.
My favourite thing about this is just how thoroughly predictable it was.
And I don’t mean in hindsight either, tons of people called it the moment Elon started hanging around Trump.
yeah but they’re choosing to watch that out of millions. It’s not because that was literally just what was in the house so it was that or nothing.
Erik the Viking. I think it came with petrol coupons or something. Never seen it mentioned anywhere since.
